Indexes

Good introduction from University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). There are 100.000 or more science journals. There are many metrics to compare both authors and journals, including the Hirsch index (h-index, proposed by Jorge E. Hirsch in 2005) and the journal impact factor (jif).

h-index

The h-index is an index that attempts to measure both the scientific productivity and the apparent scientific impact of a scientist. The h-index is based on the set of the researcher's most cited papers and the number of citations that they have received in other people's publications. The h-index is defined as the maximum value of h such that the given author/journal has published h papers that have each been cited at least h times. It is calculated by a.o. WOS, Scopus and Google Scholar. Their resulting h-indexes differ: Many other indexes exist, including the c-, e-, g-, s-index etc.

Journal impacts

The impact factor (IF) is a measure of the frequency with which the average article in a journal has been cited in a particular year. It is used to measure the importance or rank of a journal by calculating the times it's articles are cited. The calculation is based on a two-year period and involves dividing the number of times articles were cited by the number of articles that are citable.

Service providers for indexes and impact factors

Different service providers calculate their own versions of the indexes and impact factors.

Clarivate WOS

The Science Citation Index (SCI, launched in 1964) has a large coverage. Originally produced by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), created by Eugene Garfield. The SCI index is made available online through different platforms, such as the Web of Science and SciSearch. There is also an expanded version, SCIE.
